Undergraduate Program

CO-MAJOR

Besides the primary departmental major requirements, students earning a co-major in Latin American and Latino Studies must also fulfill the following requirements:

Language Competence: The student must complete SPAN 2013 (or an equivalent course). There are options to recognize language skills acquired outside of formal coursework at the University of Arkansas; please contact the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures for more information. Additional practice in Spanish or Portuguese, along with studying and living in a Latin American country, can enhance language skills and is highly recommended.

Students are required to complete a minimum of three hours in the interdepartmental colloquium, LALS 4003. With the director's approval, the colloquium can be repeated if the topic differs.

Electives: Students must complete 18 hours of approved courses focusing on Latin American or Latino content, in addition to LALS 4003, or opt for individualized study under instructors specializing in Latin American or Latino Studies. Students choosing individualized readings or directed research must secure approval from the LALS director. Refer to our Courses Page for a list of courses in the rotation. The following conditions apply when selecting electives:

1. Select courses from at least 3 different departments.
2. A maximum of 9 hours may be submitted from courses taken in any one department.

MINOR

Students pursuing a minor in Latin American and Latino Studies must complete the Colloquium (LALS 4003), fulfill the language requirements described above, and complete at least 12 hours from the electives listed on the Courses Page. Electives must include courses from at least two different academic departments. Up to 3 additional hours of LALS 4003 may count toward the 12 hours, provided the topic is different.
